The water in the Zippori River and its tributaries has been a source of human settlement and agricultural cultivation in the basin for thousands of years. However, modern life along the river in recent decades has caused a deterioration in water quality. Among the reasons for this are runoff and erosion of soil from agricultural fields, which contain pesticides and fertilizers, low-quality urban runoff, overflows of sewage and wastewater from wastewater treatment plants, and more. At the same time, the use of the river’s water for agricultural purposes has reduced the amount of water flowing along the river. In addition, construction that covered many seepage areas in the river basin, along with a decrease in the amount of precipitation and other processes, has caused a decrease in the amount of water in the river. The Zippori River Restoration Project aims to restore the quality of the river’s water and maintain the amount of water through a number of ambitious actions.

  • The “Manda” and “Selelim” wastewater treatment plants are being upgraded to stop the flow of wastewater and sewage into the Bird Basin.
  • Water pipes are being installed for farmers in the Ras Ali to Ka’biya area – to allow them to increase the output of agricultural produce and use clean water. The water in the pipes comes from springs or flood reservoirs.

  • We created floodplains downstream to create wetland habitats and also to reduce the
    risk of flooding in the Kishon River, which Nahal Zippori connects to.

  • We regularly check the water quality downstream of the stream at an automatic station for long-term monitoring and understanding the changes occurring in the stream.
  • We are upgrading and renovating sewage pumping stations close to the stream, and installing special facilities that will prevent polluted runoff from flowing into the stream. We have established a directorate for the treatment of pollutants…

Pasture in the stream basin

The cows and sheep in the Zippori River basin are an integral part of the unique landscape, however, when the herds get too close to the stream or enter it, they damage the stream banks, water quality and the delicate aquatic ecology of the stream. Therefore, as part of the project, we contact the herd owners and find appropriate solutions to move the grazing away from the stream. We find drinking solutions for the herds in locations remote from the stream, and provide temporary or permanent fencing. This way, the herds can continue to graze peacefully, without disturbing the stream. As of 2024, X herds have been regulated.
