Story
The stream

The opening paragraph of the story of the streams in general is pathos, a connection to emotion. Lorem Ipsum is a term for a completely meaningless text - sometimes also called a "dummy".

About the National Project for the Restoration of Nahal Zippori

The Kishon Drainage and Rivers Authority, in collaboration with Yad Hanadiv, is currently promoting a project of national importance – the restoration and development of the Zippori River Basin. The project partners include national and local authorities and bodies that strive to transform the river area into a corridor of nature, heritage landscapes, and recreational and hiking opportunities. The project focuses on a 32-kilometer-long stretch of river, located within a basin that extends over approximately 300 square kilometers between the Nazareth Mountains and Haifa Bay.

The regional context

The Zippori Stream is one of the most important coastal streams in Israel. It is the Eitan Stream that flows from the Nazareth Mountains to the Bay of Haifa and empties into the sea together with the Kishon River. It is an open space of agriculture, nature, landscape and people that have been woven together throughout history [to expand a bit here – archaeology, the historical story of settlement around the water – Reina, the aqueduct]. The stream axis constitutes a national ecological corridor from the Sea of Galilee to the Mediterranean Sea and a human corridor that connects the urban space of the Nazareth Mountains and the Haifa metropolis.

How did we get here?

The Zippori Stream Restoration Project is the result of winning a competition within the framework of a call for proposals to select a stream area for Yad Hanadiv’s restoration. The plan is headed by a basin planning and management concept, which addresses the catchment basin in all its resources, aspects, and components, and includes a five-year implementation plan and a long-term management mechanism, as part of realizing the vision.

The Nahal Zippori Project as a Leader in Perceptual Change in Israel

The plan reflects a basin planning and management concept that proposes a paradigm shift for river planning – from a consideration of the river channel – to a basin view, from a narrow perspective of hydrological function – to a holistic view, from the language of runoff removal – to the language of water resource management. The plan is based on a multi-layered approach that sees the social fabric in the basin as an integral part of spatial restoration, and strives to sustain a deep social process, through which a community sustains a river, and the river sustains a community. It assimilates these current concepts of sustainable basin management, while at the same time taking an active part in translating them into applied spatial practice.

Ecology

A fundamental part of stream restoration is addressing its ecological status, and adapting development and restoration plans to the stream’s ecology. To know whether our interventions in the stream are improving the biodiversity and complexity of animal and plant communities, regular monitoring is necessary.

Water

The water in the Zippori River and its tributaries has been a source of human settlement and agricultural cultivation in the basin for thousands of years. However, modern life along the river in recent decades has caused a deterioration in water quality through leaching from agricultural fields, urban runoff, sewage overflows and wastewater, and more. In addition, construction that covered many seepage areas in the basin, along with other processes, has caused a decrease in water quantity. Therefore, the Zippori River Restoration Project aims to restore the quality of the river’s water and maintain the quantity of water through a number of ambitious projects.

1. Ensuring optimal water quality in the stream and removing contaminants

2. Ensuring a natural flow regime in the stream and basin according to the seasonal cycle and on natural flows originating from springs and winter tides.

3. Cessation of pumping and abstraction of stream water and supply of alternative water through transmission systems and regional water corporations.

4. Reducing flood risks.

Agriculture

The cows and sheep in the Zippori River basin are an integral part of the unique landscape, however, when the herds get too close to the stream or enter it, they damage the stream banks, water quality and the delicate aquatic ecology of the stream. Therefore, as part of the project, we contact the herd owners and find appropriate solutions to move the grazing away from the stream. We find drinking solutions for the herds in locations remote from the stream, and provide temporary or permanent fencing. This way, the herds can continue to graze peacefully, without disturbing the stream. As of 2024, X herds have been regulated.

Education

Although the Zippori Stream restoration project will be completed in a few years, in order to preserve everything that has been done here, future generations must also be educated to protect the environment, which will only be possible through a strong connection between man and his environment and a personal connection to the stream.
We operate on several levels, with the central principle guiding us being a direct connection between the students and the stream basin through learning, activities and extracurricular experiences.
